Every one likes to mention how good their stereo systems are, how much they like them, and how good they sound, but who here has had a truly terrible stereo setup? No stereo doesn’t count.

Kinja'd!!!

When I bought my 924* it didn’t come with a radio, and being the cheap bastard I am, I cobbled a stereo together with what I had laying around.

Kinja'd!!!

The head unit was a stock take out AquaTronics casset te deck unit with an AUX port from Dad’s 2004 Crestliner, and the speakers were 2 six inch round Bose units from my old ‘95 Aurora hooked to the front channels, sitting in the back seat on the floor with no enclosure what-so-ever.

It sounded truly terrible, but on a nice day with the windows down and the sunroof off, I’d crank up some Ke$ha (don’t judge me) as loud as that crappy head unit could handle, and I tell you what Oppo, I’ve have very few happier days.

Side note: I’m not sure how the stock radio was ever wired, and I couldn’t find the wires, so I split the wire going to the constantly hot clock, which put the radio on non-keyed power so you had to remember to turn it off when you got out of the car.

*Damn do I miss that car.

I have a bluetooth speaker, which is almost single din sized, just hanging out in the empty spot where a radio would go

the speaker was a corporate gift too, so it was zero $ invested

My radio picks up the electronic noise from my coils and outputs it through the speakers.

What about “the stereo barely worked and sounded like shit when I bought it, and within a few months gave out altogether”?

I thought I had a picture somewhere, but apparently I don’t. At any rate, the Georgia has some no-name brand head unit that has buttons instead of dials for everything including volume, none of which are intuitively located. The sound quality is in good enough that you know what you're listening to. The rear speakers work as normal as can be. The front speakers work intermittently. The most consistent thing that makes them work or not is opening and closing the door.

The stereo in my truck sounds ok, stock head unit and old Polk speakers in the front doors. The left front channel cuts in and out at random though.

The stock stereo in my old Roadmaster was a real POS. The sound was horrible, and the volume was inadequate. The funny thing about that car , was adjusting the built in equalizer would change which parts of the interior would speak , and at what frequency.

I used to have a crappy Ciera in high school, when I first got it the factory head unit was dying. Whoever rode shotgun had to wail on the dash when the tunes gave out.

In high school I was commuting to my tractor-driving job in my dad’s old Yugo and needed some sound. I took a Panasonic tuner out of a John Deere tractor and ran wires to some 4x6’s we took out of my brother’s Impala when he put in 6x9’s. The speakers were just sittting in the back seat, because with a Yugo I wasn’t in any danger of needing the back seat for anything else. You could (barely) hear John Cougar over the exhaust leak, so I thought it was  an excellent return on my investment of $0

I just replaced the factory amp for the stereo in my Sunbird, so now I can actually hear the radio and how crackly and whiny the 30-year-old Delco speakers are.

Kinja'd!!!

I also replaced the cassette player and got it working. My grandmother gave me two briefcases full of ‘80s and ‘90s country and rock cassettes. I keep those with the car for extra rad ness.

The stock AM-only radio in the Chevelle doesn’t sound particularly good through the tiny 48-year-old paper speakers in the dash.

what qualifies as a bad stereo? My Queen came with a basic, analog radio in the dash. Five preset buttons, am/fm coverage, and no cassette deck.

My 2010 Ford Ranger left the factory with an AM/FM radio with 2 speakers, no aux no USB. Now your probably thinking that’s not too terrible but within a year the volume knob “broke” when I turned a right corner the volume would decrease and when I turned a left it would get louder. I eventually replaced it with a nice Pioneer unit with 4 Pioneer speakers.

If you consider it bad that’s good enough, I just wanted to share in the terrible radio experience with others.

Nice.

BTW I adore your Sunbird. Dad had a Corsica when I was growing up and while they aren’t the same, they’re close enough that your interior brings up lots of memories of that terrible terrible little car.

Basically the same thing I did, but you did it first! The 924 also had an exhaust leak.

Thanks! I do too. I grew up in a Corsica as well. My mom bought it as an ex-program car in late 1991. We had it until she unexpectedly passed away in 2001. My stepdad sold it with 175,000 miles an it was still running fine.

I wanted an L-Body (a Corsica or a Beretta), but I couldn’t find one so I settled for my J-body.

We traded the Corsica off at 185,000 for an oxy/acy torch thinking it was basically at the end of it’s life, because honestly it probably was. The person who got it got at least another 5 years out of it (and honestly might still be driving it, that was 4-5 years ago?)

I have a secret love for the Beretta, especially the GTZ and Z26 ones. If I ever get enough play money I want to pick one up as a collector.
